a bigger playing field
The Group has expanded the scope of its activities since 2000, particularly in the growing market of sun and reading glasses. The Group stands out through its ability to develop innovative sunlenses that ensure protection, performance and comfort. A synergy made possible by the convergence of our unique expertise in corrective lenses and sunwear technologies.
In 2010, the Essilor group entered the market for non-prescription glasses or reading glasses (readers) and pre-assembled sunglasses with the acquisition of the North American leader, FGX International. It continued to develop in this area with the acquisition in 2011 of StyleMark, US distributor in reading glasses. Already active in sunwear, the Group accelerated its development in this activity with several major acquisitions: in 2013 it acquired a 50% stake in Xiamen Yarui Optical, owner of Bolon® brand – the leading sunwear brand in China, and bought the American company Costa®, a specialist in sunwear for water sports.

To expand its market in sunwear and readers, the Essilor group has allied itself, in line with its partnership strategy, with the best local players such as Polycore™, FGX International, Bolon® or Costa del Mar®. With leading brands like Foster Grant®, and a portfolio of significant licenses such as Bodyglove, Gargoyles, Dockers or NineWest, FGX International is the world’s number 1 in sunwear and readers. Costa Del Mar®, a company created in 1983, has specialized in sunwear for water sports, developing ranges and specific technologies for a demanding clientele. Bolon®, a brand of Xiamen Yarui Optical, is a pan-Asia success story, in part due to its visibility in airports, prestigious shopping gallerias and Duty Free outlets. In Turkey, Essilor acquired a majority interest in 2015 in Merve Optik, a distributor of optical products based in Istanbul that owns the sunwear brand Ossé® which is highly popular in Turkey.
