Our manufacturing activities have already substantially reduced their environmental impact. Today we continue our efforts in five priority areas: strengthening environmental management processes, reducing water usage and securing supplies, improving energy efficiency in manufacturing and transportation, reducing carbon footprint and adapting to climate change and limiting waste generation and optimizing recycling.
Reducing our water
Essilor has already made significant progress over the last fifteen years in reducing the water used to produce each lens, taking into account local supply constraints. Our challenge today: making further small gains and sharing good practices to smooth the variances that still occur between our production sites. This has been the objective of the Reboost Water program which has enabled us to map out the water consumption of our main production sites, compare performance and define medium-term water consumption reduction plans.

Thanks to our Reboost Water program we have reduced water usage in our mass production sites by 40% since 2007. This is the equivalent of 4 years of water usage saved.
Improving our energy
For many years, we have been successfully and continually optimizing energy use at our sites. Today, having achieved the most significant gains, our main work is improving the energy performance of buildings and analyzing for further energy efficiency improvement in our manufacturing processes.
Limiting our carbon
The nature of our business means we have a light environmental impact. Nevertheless, we believe that limiting our carbon footprint is an opportunity to reduce costs associated with our business such as energy and transport, limit our energy dependence even if it’s modest, anticipate the introduction of binding climate agreements (taxes, quotas …) and meet investor or analyst expectations, as well as those of our major customers. During a 2015 marked by the COP21 held in France, the Essilor group has reaffirmed its intent to limit greenhouse gas emissions and maintain its low carbon business position, demonstrated by its inclusion in the Low Carbon 100 Europe index.
Reducing and recycling
To minimize waste, we eco-design new products and optimize our production processes. The scrap and residue from the polycarbonate lens surfacing process are compressed, reducing the weight of waste and collecting water which is then filtered and fed back into a prescription laboratory’s internal system. We recycle and reuse certain used effluents (oils, acids) in our facilities.
