Optimizing our environmental footprint

Our manufacturing activities have already substantially reduced their environmental impact. Today we continue our efforts in five priority areas: strengthening environmental management processes, reducing water usage and securing supplies, improving energy efficiency in manufacturing and transportation, reducing carbon footprint and adapting to climate change and limiting waste generation and optimizing recycling.

Reducing our water
usage

Essilor has already made significant progress over the last fifteen years in reducing the water used to produce each lens, taking into account local supply constraints. Our challenge today: making further small gains and sharing good practices to smooth the variances that still occur between our production sites. This has been the objective of the Reboost Water program which has enabled us to map out the water consumption of our main production sites, compare performance and define medium-term water consumption reduction plans.

Did you know?

Through a collective effort across the Group, Essilor acheived in advance its 2020 target to reduce water intensity per good lens produced by 20% compared to its 2015 baseline. By the end of 2019, Essilor's water intensity had decreased by 26%.

Improving our energy
efficiency

We are committed to improving our energy efficiency, as reflected in a steady decrease in energy intensity over the last 15 years. After achieving significant gains, we launched the Reboost Energy program with the aim of further improving and analyzing the energy performance of buildings while contributing to improve the energy efficiency of our manufacturing processes. Reboost Energy comprises different actions such as energy mapping for the main mass production sites and laboratories, installation of smart meters, benchmarking of energy models and medium-term energy reduction plans.

ADDRESSING
CLIMATE CHANGE

The nature of our business means we have a light environmental impact. Nevertheless, we believe that limiting our carbon footprint is an opportunity to reduce costs associated with our business such as energy and transport, limit our energy dependence even if it’s modest, anticipate the introduction of binding climate agreements (taxes, quotas …) and meet investor or analyst expectations, as well as those of our major customers.

Following the achievements of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations COP23 conference, we signed up to the French Climate Pledge in 2017, along with 91 other French companies which have committed, over the following years, to limit the impact on climate, notably by financing energy efficiency programs, optimizing production equipment and logistics chains, and innovating in the field of low-carbon products and services.

Our Climate Change Program aims to reduce our carbon footprint across the entire value chain and to build business resilience. Up until now, we have progressed on many fronts: assessment of the Group’s global carbon footprint across the value chain, identification of the top 3 main sources of carbon emissions, acceleration of associated programs to reduce the most significant climate related impacts, and conducting climate risk assessment to prepare the business resilience for the future.

Managing waste towards
circular economy

Waste reduction is mainly achieved through a strategy combining improvement of manufacturing yields (quality management, continuous improvement, eco-design, etc.) with the promotion of the “3Rs”.
The 3Rs include “Reducing” the volume of materials used in the various processes such as eco-design for new product, optimization for manufacturing process and distribution; “Reuse” and “Recycle” raw materials and packaging.
