The social and economic

Seeing well is essential. It’s important for education, health and safety and our quality of life. 80 of what our children learn is through sight and yet 30% of the world’s children have a vision problem. Almost 30% of the global workforce has poor vision. And this has a considerable social and economic impact. Yet in many cases, people with visual impairments do not even know they need a correction because they have never had a sight test.

Increasing awareness through

To accelerate the rate at which the global vision crisis can be solved, the Group acts on many levels to elevate awareness on the importance of vision correction and vision protection, educating policy makers and consumers with dedicated campaigns but also supporting expert-to-expert knowledge sharing on vision science and patient needs.

Created in 2012 by Essilor and led by five independent directors, the Vision Impact Institute is a non-profit organization that collects global scientific data on visual health. Its goal is to consolidate this research and share it with policymakers and the general public in order to raise awareness of the socio-economic impact of poor vision. Today, the Vision Impact Institute website has one of the richest databases in the world on visual correction and eye health.

In 2019, Essilor published Eliminating Poor Vision in a Generation: What will it take to eliminate uncorrected refractive errors by 2050? to define the scale of the vision care crisis, as it relates to uncorrected refractive errors, over the next 30 years.

Essilor is also a strong advocate for good vision on the road, and has been partnering with the world’s best known institutions and cross industry players. In 2017, Essilor partnered with the FIA to launch the “Road Safety Starts with Good Vision” campaign that served as a critical lever to create awareness on the importance of good vision for the safety of all road users (drivers, bikers, cyclists or pedestrians alike), reaching millions of people around the world. Since then, the FIA and Essilor have jointly promoted the FIA-created “Check your vision” golden rule, including vision among other main risk factors on the road (speed, buckle seat belts, mobile phone usage, check tyres, etc).

In 2019, the Group entered three partnerships with big global players in the mobility sector, Renault, Michelin and Total. These collaborations focus on common awareness campaigns and actions at global and country scale jointly promoting the importance of good vision for safe mobility.
Keeping this strong momentum since February 2020, Essilor officially joined the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF), becoming one of the first donors to the fund. This partnership promotes global action on good vision for road users while contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Grassroots action
to raise awareness

We work on a local, national and international level to raise awareness about visual health. Actions include events and media campaigns such as Think About Your Eyes in the United States and in Britain and local campaigns for eye screening, including a global campaign each World Sight Day. We also finance the research and collection of statistics about vision health.
