World Sight Day 2020: Protecting Your Eyes From Light

In line with its corporate mission – Improving Lives by Improving Sight – Essilor’s campaign for the 20th annual World Sight Day focuses on the invisible dangers that light poses to eyes and the importance of keeping your eyes well protected.

Light is part of our daily lives. Our eyes are constantly exposed to light – not just natural light, but also light from the screens on the devices we use each day.

In the face of this year’s pandemic, people around the world have had to adopt new working habits and find new ways of staying connected. As a result, they are making more frequent use of digital devices and are exposed to blue-violet light for longer periods.

To raise public awareness, Essilor’s “Happy Moments” campaign presents moments in our day-to-day lives that show how we’re constantly exposed to light and how, unfortunately, we don’t always instinctively remember to protect our eyes.

To inspire everyone to develop good habits, the putvisionfirst.com website, available in 11 languages, invites visitors to test their vision and choose the right glasses for every situation, both indoors and outdoors.

As they do every year for World Sight Day, Essilor’s subsidiaries and partners around the world are taking steps to educate the public about the importance of good vision.

A few examples are: in Laos, local opticians are offering vision tests to the public and in Brazil, vision tests will be given to schoolchildren in underprivileged neighborhoods. Essilor Colombia and Essilor Tunisia are amplifying the campaign via social media, to ensure that as many people as possible learn about the risks of prolonged exposure to blue-violet light and UV rays and the importance of good vision. In Singapore, educational workshops are taking place along with a drive to raise funds.

Despite the organizational restrictions imposed by COVID-19, Essilor takes pride in the array of initiatives underway and the enthusiasm of its teams around the world.
