Operations: a global capacity to innovate in quality, service and safety

LIFE is a Group-wide collaborative improvement program adopted by teams working in Essilor’s operations worldwide across production, engineering, supply chain, quality. Since 2013, LIFE has been progressively deployed across the Group’s production plants. Over 3000 ideas were implemented in 2014, leading to the creation of a new network of continuous improvement managers in sites across the world. Improvement ideas can vary from small changes in the layout of a local department to process changes that could be deployed in facilities across the Group.

In this first LIFE awards program, 36 initiatives from 14 production sites were submitted in four categories: Safety, Kaizen (improvement), Customer and Service. Ideas ranged from an ergonomic project for unloading lenses in Thailand that has reduced lead time by 30% and improved workplace safety, a reorganisation in packing areas that has cut lost-time and boosted productivity in Mexico, to better collaboration between production and distribution to reduce stock and improve service levels to customers.

In 2016 Essilor will continue expanding the LIFE program to all its production plants, supply chain and with partners worldwide. This collaborative improvement program is proving an incredible resource of ideas for improving quality, service and the working environment. Essilor’s global operations and supply chain are a key strength enabling the Group to deliver more than 500 million lenses to customers across the world every year.​
