Construction of the Essilor Technology Center Vietnam (ETCV) began in August 2016 and was completed in early 2017. Following the installation of state-of-the-art digital surfacing equipment, Essilor technical experts began the recruitment and training of the new team on site. ETCV went live at the beginning of March 2017 and has quickly proved its ability to meet customer demand for mid-tier and high-end lens products. The lab team, based in Ho Chi Minh City, supplies Essilor lenses like Crizal and Varilux for the Vietnamese market through an Essilor joint venture distribution company as well supporting the Group’s local partner Chemilens.
Vietnam, a densely populated country with some 95 million inhabitants, is currently experiencing annual GDP growth of around 6%. It’s estimated that up to 36 million people currently live with uncorrected refractive error. Establishing a facility in Vietnam is an important milestone in Essilor’s overall mission of improving lives by improving sight.
This new lab in Vietnam is one of 223 prescription labs in the Asia/Pacific/Middle East/Africa region. Prescription laboratories take semi-finished lenses manufactured at Essilor production facilities and complete the surfacing, polishing, multi-layer coating and edging-mounting processes. The Group’s global network of 490 labs surfaced and coated some 129 million lenses in 2016.
Essilor has expanded its manufacturing site in the Amazonian region of northern Brazil with a second production facility to offer better vision correction, protection and prevention.
