Essilor’s manufacturing plant in Mexico celebrates 30th anniversary
On October 1st, Essilor teams celebrated 30 years of lenses manufacturing at its SOFI plant in Chihuahua, Mexico. The facility was one of Essilor’s first mass production plants set up outside of France during the 1980s, a decade of international investment and growth for the Group.
Celebrations in Chihuahua focused on many of the individuals who have spent over 20 years developing the expertise and skills of teams at the site. Essilor guests and local dignitaries were able to discover first-hand SOFI’s products and processes through a tour of the facility. The SOFI facility includes a mass production centre and two Rx labs inaugurated in 2008 and 2011.
By 1985, Essilor had 9000 employees worldwide and was also beginning to establish prescription labs in key international markets. Today the Group has 33 production sites and a network of 490 prescription labs across the globe enabling Essilor to produce 1.2 million lenses per day personalized to the individual needs of each wearer.
As a memento of the day, 1100 people posed for a panoramic photo
