Essilor is a gold sponsor of the International Year of Light in France, which was launched at a prestigious event in the Sorbonne University in Paris on 8 January. For Essilor, 2015 will be a year-long opportunity to underline the importance of continuing research and development of light-based technologies that open the way to innovative approaches to new visual health solutions.
The 20th century was defined as the electronic era. The 21st century will be shaped by the problem-solving potential of light technologies in tackling major societal challenges. 2015 marks a number of important anniversaries — from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago, the centenary of Einstein’s theory of general relativity to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.
Throughout this year a program of national, regional and international events will be organised in UN member countries. The IYL opening two-day conference takes place at UNESCO on 19-20 January bringing together some 1000 participants including international diplomats and decision-makers, Nobel laureates, CEOs, and science and industry leaders from across the globe.
