Since 2003, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity in Morocco has been organizing medical humanitarian camps for underprivileged populations around the country. During the one-week camp in May, held in Tangier, Morocco’s second most important industrial centre, 7,000 disadvantaged people including some with disabilities were given access to a variety of basic healthcare services. Volunteers from a number of organizations joined forces to offer medical check-ups in six mobile vans, including a fully equipped ophthalmic unit. Essilor’s local partners in Morocco – L’N Optic, Optiben and Movisia – mobilized their teams to provide eye tests for a record 1500 people over three days, and to deliver over 700 customized pairs of glasses for beneficiaries within 4 days of the event from the Group’s local laboratory.
In a country with a young and growing population like Morocco, improving people’s vision is fundamental for its prosperity. In Morocco around 8 million people still have no access to vision care and correction. In 2015 Vision for Life, Essilor’s strategic giving fund, supported two national vision care programs in Morocco with a particular focus on children and women. This latest initiative is a continuation of the Group’s philanthropic efforts to raise awareness of the importance of healthy vision in the country and to improve the sight of people in need.
