Essilor innovates for clearer vision from every angle

Our lives are filled with light all around us which creates a world full of reflections, with the result that one in every two wearers is bothered by light reflection on their lenses. Through an in-depth study of the changes in our daily light environment as well as consumer expectations, Essilor R&D teams set out to improve visual comfort through better anti-reflective performance and lens transparency.

In creating Crizal® Sapphire™ 360°* coating, researchers redesigned the lens architecture and coating so that the front and back surfaces of the lens interact together to capture light disturbances and from multiple angles. A new patented nanolayer on the back surface was added to minimize visible light reflections at 360° while keeping a high level of UV protection.

Crizal® Sapphire™ 360° coating was widely tested by wearers in a range of everyday situations such as screen use or driving in order to assess people’s experience indoors, outdoors and at different times of day and night. Thanks to its Multi-Angular Technology, lateral reflections are reduced by up to 30% and front reflections are reduced by up to 20%**.

Crizal® Sapphire™ 360° coating is the latest innovation in the 25 years history of one of the Group’s flagship brands – Crizal®, first launched in 1992 to improve visual comfort by reducing glare and enhancing the transparency, resistance and durability of lenses. Over the years Crizal® has continued to lead the way in bringing clearest vision with better protection, for example through added filters against UV and harmful blue-violet light.
