Low vision or visual impairment is defined by vision loss linked to significant deterioration of visual acuity and/or reduced field of vision. This term is used when binocular visual acuity after best correction is less than 3/10 and/or when the visual field is less than 20°. They cannot be corrected by ordinary eyeglasses, contact lenses, or by medication or surgery. However, there are visual aids that allow people with low vision to see certain details that they cannot perceive with their residual vision, enabling them to do certain activities previously not possible. No visual aid can restore vision in all circumstances; each is selected according based to a particular targeted activity, and the individual circumstances of the person and his or her visual state.
