293 Essilor laboratories throughout in the world
The acquisition of prescription laboratories is at the heart of the Essilor Group’s strategy. In addition, Essilor relies on a large number of independent laboratories that distribute our lenses.
The job of the laboratories is to deliver lenses that meet wearer prescriptions to our customers in the shortest possible time (opticians, independent optometrists, wholesalers, optical chain stores).
Customized high technology
Essilor Group prescription laboratories are capable of producing several billion combinations of ophthalmic lenses (materials, design, power and coatings) from semi-finished lenses manufactured by our standard production plants.
The laboratories handle:
-
the finishing of semi-finished lenses, using the most advanced technologies for surfacing, coatings and lens edging/mounting;
-
the most advanced progressive lenses (Varilux Physio®), manufactured using digital surfacing technology.
Always at the cutting edge
The development of new generation products such as Crizal® or AST® requires total control of the new technologies. In order to pass on the benefit of these advances directly to their customers, Essilor laboratories are backed up by engineering and technical support services. These services are structured to deliver speedy distribution of new products throughout the world.
The effectiveness a local network
Essilor currently relies on a network of 270 laboratories around the world. The depth of this coverage has enabled the Group to develop its local services and to ensure optimum safety as for the distribution of our products.
Around the world, a lens is produced every second by an Essilor laboratory. Between 2001 and 2006, the number of prescription units in the Group increased by 50%, particularly in North America and Asia.
