Role and responsibilities

Constantly innovating to preserve our technological lead.

The innovation demonstrated by the Essilor group is one of the reasons for its international success. Half of all turnover comes from products less than five years old and we devote 4 % of this turnover to Research and Development.

With more than 5100 patents and an increase in the number of patents filed each year, we are confirming our commitment to innovation.

Since glass is a high-tech product involving numerous technologies, Research and Development's role is to achieve constant improvements in order to satisfy our customers' expectations as much as possible. Over the last few years, we have increased the number of our products three-fold while halving their production time.

R&D must address three major challenges:
  • act as a driving force in the development of high value-added products, services and technologies which will maintain Essilor's leading position in the market;
  • monitor emerging technologies by drawing on international partnerships in order to open new technological possibilities;
  • develop and protect the group's knowledge and innovations, supported by a methodical patent registration policy.

Our Research and Development department numbers more than 550 employees around the world, spread between four sites:
  • 360 people in France;
  • 100 people in the United States;
  • 40 people in Japan;
  • 15 people in Singapore.

To constantly improve our anticipation of customer expectations and be able to open up to new innovations, R&D also relies on the best global expertise through its wide-ranging and international network of partnerships, including large academic centers, industrial groups and innovative SMEs.

Profiles wanted

  • Graduates or post-graduates from an engineering school in the fields of ophthalmic optics, chemistry, materials or metrology;
  • Expertise in a technical field;
  • English vital.
