Special Olympics Opening Eyes
Helping athletes in the Special Olympics to see better
Since 2002, Essilor has been an exclusive global distributor of corrective lenses to the Special Olympics-Lions Club International Opening Eyes® program, which aims to meet the visual correction needs of athletes in the Special Olympics. During this period, the Group has supplied the athletes with more than 100,000 prescription lenses. Essilor employees and its partners therefore regularly take part in the events held around the world and are highly involved in offering quality eye care to those with intellectual disabilities. In 2010 alone, more than 16,000 pairs of glasses fitted with Essilor lenses were given to athletes taking part in the Special Olympics organized in more than 150 countries around the world.
Opening Eyes is the largest initiative carried out under the Special Olympics' Healthy Athletes® program. Its aim is to improve the visual health of those suffering from intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion of people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through year-round sports training and athletic competitions and other events - for more than 2.25 million children and adults with intellectual disabilities in more than 150 countries - Special Olympics has created a community to honor each participant's individual talents. Healthy Athletes is a program developed within the Special Olympics which aims to provide tests to the program's athletes in seven different fields of healthcare: eyesight, hearing, dental health, healthy living, physical exercise, chiropody and sporting activities.
