20 November 2008 Essilor wins two Silmo d’Or AwardsOn October 30, Essilor took home the top prize in two categories at the Silmo international optics show.
Varilux® Ipseo® New Edition was the winner in the lens category. This new generation Varilux® Ipseo® lens offers image stabilization along with the numerous customized features available on the previous version. Varilux® Ipseo® New Edition leverages innovative Dual Digital Vision technology, which splits the addition between the front and back surfaces of the lens to best suit the wearer’s head and eye movements.
Essilor was also recognized in the Workshop Tool and Equipment category for Essibox, a data-sharing platform for opticians. This solution makes mounting easier by transferring data automatically between the Essibox application and the optician’s various tools.
The Silmo d’Or award, a mark of quality and originality, is attributed to products that demonstrate the industry’s key values of innovation, technology and creativity.
14 November 2008 Inauguration of a R&D Center in Shanghai
The first Joint R&D Center created between Essilor and a non-French university has been inaugurated on Saturday, November 1st in Shanghai (China).
Essilor chose this University for its Strong Expertise in the nanomaterial preparation field.
The inauguration ceremony took place in presence of Xavier Fontanet, Jean-Luc Schuppiser, Carol Xueref, He Yi, Richard Bosmans, Jean-Philippe Launay and Jian Zhao for Essilor and of Mr. Wang, Vice-Chairman of Education Commission, Shanghai Municipal, Mr Niu, Chief Engineer of Science & Technology Commission, Shanghai Municipal, and Profesor Zhou, Acting President of Shanghai University.
The SEJRDC team (Shanghai University Essilor Joint R&D Center) is co-managed by Prof. Liyi Shi from Shanghai University and Dr Jian Zhao from Essilor.
It includes four Program Managers, four Research Engineers and nine Shanghai University Ph. D. and Master students.
The SEJRDC is located on Shanghai University’s Baoshan Campus.
The active research programs are focused on high performance and multi-functional nanomaterials, aimed at increasing the value added of Essilor’s new products.

15 July 2008 New Essilor Site in Créteil, France
On March 31, 2008, Essilor inaugurated its new site in Créteil, France. Named Oudry 4, the new site houses members of the Worlds Optics R&D and Global Engineering teams, representing a total of 130 people.
Working side-by-side at the same site, the two departments can now exchange information more efficiently, helping to secure a very profitable future for Group product design.
The creation of this new site is part of a process launched in 2005 at the R&D sites in St. Maur, France and St. Petersburg, USA, to bring different areas of expertise together under a single roof.
7 July 2008 Janus Prize for Health for Varilux Physio Fit
Varilux Physio Fit™, a progressive lens customized to suit selected frame characteristics, is a winner yet again. Previously awarded the Silmo d’Or prize, the lens has now won the Janus Prize for Health.
The jury was impressed by the lens’ ability to deliver both innovative technologies and vision quality to presbyopes.
The Janus Prize for Health is awarded by the Institut Français du Design, which promotes projects that aim to improve quality of life with products designed to take into account the patient’s needs.

To satisfy the special needs of athletic presbyopes, Essilor has launched Varilux® Sport, a new progressive lens designed for such sports as mountain biking, sailing and skiing…
This new design, which integrates advanced digital surfacing technology, delivers an enlarged visual field and reduces optical aberrations on the sides of the lens.
The lens is made of polycarbonate material because of its resistance, lightness and UV protection.
Varilux® Sport is being introduced in a number of European countries in first-half 2008 and will be launched in North America as from July 2008.
21 April 2008 Transitions VI
In February 2008, Essilor launched a new generation of variable-tint lenses in North and Central America.
The lens is just as transparent as a standard lens indoors and darkens by 30% more than the previous generation at average temperatures. It also delivers superior performance at high temperatures.
Transitions VI will also be introduced in Asia and Latin America during the year.

Essilor® 360°™ Lenses - High Resolution Vision™ applied to single-vision lenses
Essilor has launched its new single-vision Essilor® 360°™ lenses that deliver true High Resolution Vision™.
Developed through physiological research, the Essilor® 360°™ lens leverages Twin RX Technology, which has been used for Varilux Physio® and Varilux® Ipseo® lenses since 2006.
Applied for the first time to single - vision lenses, the technology provides wearers with sharper vision and a 30% improvement in contrast sensitivity, making them ideal for use in low-light conditions or when severe corrections are required.
The Essilor 360°™ lenses, branded as Essilor Advans in France, have been on the market in Europe since second-half 2007. Rollout in Canada and the United States is scheduled for 2008.
